Facilities
Wifi was quite good here and it was cheap! Cheapest we found up the east coast which is surprising because it is such a big hostel.
There is a swimming pool here, not that we experienced it because we were always on day trips in the day but we were told it was nice!
Gilligans is known for being a party hostel and no party hostel would be equipped without a bar, right? Gilligans bar/restaurant is good at all times of day. There are countless drink and food deals, although the the meal with a drink deal we were told was not great! However, this does mean that there are very strict rules about bringing drink in! There are body guards who search bags, they have cctv and will come up to rooms. Do not get on the wrong side of these guards because they will not leave you alone!
Reception is 24 hour! So whenever you need to check out, check in, query anything they are there to help or you know just stand there...but I will save that for my Staff section!
There is a kitchen on each floor yet you still have to fight for fridge space and to cook..figures right? The kitchen appliances themselves are quite good though so you win some you lose some ay.
Showers and Toilets
The facilities here are ensuite. What I liked about this, was that the toilet, shower and sink were separated because that meant you weren't having to wait.
Staff
Staff could be great but at times unhelpful. For example, when we're checking in there was quite a few of us from the same greyhound and he spoke to everyone loads about pointless things. Now, I get it, he wanted to build a rapport so we liked him and the hostel in general but not after a long journey- no no no. Another example, when I went to print our boarding passes off- they weren't not printing correctly but staff just shrugged their shoulders and left me to it.
Breakfast
One day we will have free breakfast again!
Value for Money
We again,used our base card here but this is a popular hostel so you will have no worries finding like minded travellers here.
Dorms
So when we were travelling up the east coast we met girls who told us that their travel agents had booked them in to all girls rooms because the boys can be a bit dirty here. We had not. We didn't really believe them until we walked in to our room which I could only describe as a pig sty. Although, arguably not Gilligans problem- it was definitely ours.
Location
Good location, although slightly far from the Greyhound stop but it was definitely manageable!
Overall, I liked Gilligans and can understand why it has such a good reputation with travellers although the rooms themselves aren't the greatest.
